I hope someone can help. One of my 3-month old hens suddenly couldn't walk. She can't manage to get out of the pen to eat and drink, She eats well when I take food to her so she has a good appetite. I have started some vitamins but her toes are all curled up and every thing was stiff. She is eating and drinking as long as I put it near her. Her feet are still curled up and can only stand on one leg.

Any suggestions?

Could be a vitamin defiency. Try riboflavin because that will help if its a defiency. Is her leg paralized? Or sticking out in any non natural position? Or just curled up as if hurt. I know riboflavin defiency can be a cause of this. Try the vitamins and riboflavin and
see if it helps. Can you by chance post a picture of
her leg? This way we can see for ourselves what exactly is happening with her. Best wishes

Can you feel a break or are there any swollen or hot areas that could be a sprain. Last year I had a hen like that. I made a splint from lollipop sticks, bandages and medical take. I broke four sticks to size and sanded them down so there was no splinters. I then put two on either side of the leg and wrapped the leg with a bandage then secured it with medical tape. I put the hen in a cage and gave her half a crushed vitamin tablet it her food and some garlic in her water. I kept her confined for a week, letting her out for ten minute spells just for fresh air. She greatly improved in one week so I changed the splint and let her out in her run with the other hens and she was almost perfect afterwards.

No injuries that I can see, no hot spots that I can feel. I have started her on some aspirin and some vitamins and will keep her away from the other for a few days. I will try to get a photo if I can. Thanks for the advice.

I had a similar thing happen with one of my girls at about the same age. First her toes just curled, and as time went on it got worse until both legs were bent under her. I put her in a tub away form others and put her food close and tried to get outside to some soft grass a few times a day. I was going away for the weekend and told my husband that maybe it was time to 'take care of her' cuz I didn't see any improvement.... actually thought it may be Merck's. At the last minute before I left, I told him I was not ready to let her go yet. The next week after that, she started to slowly improving, moving around her tub and them standing up and she made a complete recovery.

I am glad I decided to give her some more time. And now there are no lasting effect. Never figured out what it was.....

We have a hen that won't stand now for about 2 weeks. Trying to figure out if she is going to get better or not. Did you do anything to treat your hen or did she just get better on her own? We have no idea why all of a sudden she could not stand. Was not vaccinated as a chick. Has never laid an egg. She was born in August 2013. Please advise.

I did not treat with anything. Just a lot of 'healing hands'. I took her out and sat in the sun held her and tried to think healing thoughts. I know sounds weird, but I had no other idea what to do. I would post again in emergencies and send a picture. With mine, her toes curled up.

Denco5, did your girl ever get better? My 2.5 month old bantam pullet is doing the same thing. I'm encouraged by Zinkie's experience, but wondering of anyone else has had a pullet recover from this.

My girl is still fine, she is more than a year old now. I am not sure what I did.... but it worked!
Now when my husband has a pain, he wants me to put my hands on him.

UPDATE: She seems fine this morning up, walking and squawking.

Hi All. My Izzy Girl is about 2 years old. Tonight i went to tuck them in( i have 2 hens) and Izzy fell off her perch, then acted like her Left foot or leg was asleep. She couldnt walk. I checked her all over, no deformities of her leg or toes. Toes and foot was as warm as the rest of her. I watched her for awhile and she sortof walked, I put her back up close to the perch and she just layed down on top of the nest boxes and went to sleep. I have a heat lamp in their room, its 13 degrees outside but stays about 40 in their room
PLEASE! ANY ADVICE IS MUCH APPRECIATED

Update, 1 hour later, just checked, she is in the same spot, had diarrhea, cant stand at all. Both of her feet/toes are curled up under her, the left leg is sortof out to the side and behind her.
I hand fed her and she eagerly ate it and took a little water. Looks Bright and Alert
