Help! Lethargic hen, not eating!

So, sadly we believe this is her last day with us. If still "alive" by nightfall, my husband will euthanize her. Her breastbone is hugely visible beneath her skin, she has just wasted away.

I feel badly, thinking we should have done something sooner, but we just didn't know she was that ill until we first picked her up two weeks ago.

I have three Teary-eyed 4-H'ers at my house today. The youngest, age9, has her wrapped in an old sweatshirt, just rocking her. Her eyes are closed and she moves her head a little. She was unable to stand on her own this morning but did make it up into the coop last night. I feel kind of silly, as most folks would say "it's just a chicken" but I know that you here realize that is not totally true. :(

I am very sorry to hear that she is declining. Sometimes we do all we can but there is no miracle cure. Chickens are never just chickens for many they are pets, cheering us when we feel down, frustrating us when they are uncooperative LOL. Sounds like her final hours will be comfortable and that is important for you as well as her.

Please think about having a autopsy (I know it is a different term for chickens) done on her remains, if you have the funds, it might shed some light on what was wrong with her and if you share it here it would definitely benefit the rest of us chicken maniacs.

To have a necropsy (autopsy) done you can try contacting your local county extension, sometimes they can do it for little or no cost to you or recommend someone who can. That I know of you need a avian or agricultural vet for treating chickens and I think they are fairly pricey.

I am glad that your other girls have returned to good health, all mine did (I only lost two through the whole ordeal) but I still am only getting 1-5 eggs a day out of 20 hens when I used to get 18 eggs a day. Do not know why they will not lay. I will let them go until spring and if they still will not lay then I will have to sell them for stew.
