The Plymouth Rock Breeders thread

For 99% of the people, the birds sold from the feed stores and hatcheries meet their needs very well.  All they want is some backyard birds and some eggs.  That's about it.  So, it's a free country and hatchery folks work hard at their business and I wish them well and success.

Do I want their birds?  No thanks.  Once you've had "real birds", you don't go back.  A breeder is one who is willing to roll up their sleeves and work at producing better birds.  It's a hobby and passion.  Not everyone shares in it and that's OK.

Eh... Yeah your right, sometimes I forget that not everyone is into breeding the birds. I like the eggs and meat too, but I'd rather breed and sell. I plan on exhibiting birds in the future, so I need to get some 'real' stock and real soon if I want to do this. My birds were given to me who said the poor birds weren't wanted because they were old and half of them aren't even laying. They said they would feed them to the coyotes so i took action.

Cackle is using the photo submitted by a buyer - likely a 4-Her - who has sent the photo to show how the bird they purchased from Cackle did for them. I can attest that many of the birds shown, at least at the county level, around here are hatchery sourced and do win their classes, etc. (in fact, to be specific, one of the kids that often does best here - though he graduated this year - ordered from Cackle every year). The thing is, that the birds that are winning the champion, etc at the county level are not really being judged by APA standards and much of the judging is more based on the handler, their handling of the bird, etc and not as much on the quality of the bird itself - plus, if you are judging quality and you are judging hatchery birds against hatchery birds the "winner" may be the best bird there but still be a far cry from the quality one would find at a breeder based/poultry club type show.

Exactly. My syntax was so tortured, I didn't say what meant to say.

4H is a great thing and I'm a life member and huge supporter. But as "shows" are conducted at most county fair levels, it isn't a poultry show at all. It is as you say, an event for the kids to show off their husbandry, bird handling and bird knowledge. Great, great stuff.

But please, Folks, do not believe for a minute that hatchery sourced birds are bred to the breed standard. The hatcheries breeding style, in mass production, makes this impossible. Even a knowledgeable, dedicated, highly exprienced breeder, user their very best selected parent stock is only pleased enough to take a small fraction of the year's crop to a major APA/ABA show.

Thank you Ol Grey Mare. Best of everything to you.

That's a beautiful pullet, what type of color is that? Sorry if you were looking for like it's carriage and breast width or something, I'm a novice breeder(kinda) and these are my first barred rocks and I'm hoping to breed excellent birds. I plan on exhibiting a few birds in the future

Ducky this is a Columbian Plymouth Rock and a quite nice one at that. VERY few of them around

this cockerel will definitely be used in my breeding pen as he towers over all other silver penciled rocks I have this year. He should add some much needed size to the line

dreamofglory,

watch the length of back....he needs more. He is as fine a specimen of this variety that I've seen in a while, but if you can tighten up the wing carriage and lengthen that back, that would be a show stopper

I agree, I have had a lot of wing issues in this line. They are a work in progress.
