Keeping Chickens from Turkey Food

Hey All.

We purchased a few turkeys about two months ago when our hen went broody and now they are getting significantly larger. This past week, their appetite has far surpassed their daily rationing of feed that I was giving the clan and they are absolutely attacking any and all food like they are starving. I want to provide them a free-choice feeder that the chickens can not get in to. I'm having trouble with coming up with an idea on how to do it. Anyone have any ideas?

I'm going to switch the PVC Feed Hopper from inside my brooder to outside and keep it high enough that the chickens can't reach it. If that works, I can keep going that way, but I would prefer feeding fermented feed. I have absolutely no solution figured out for that.

Everyone free-ranges all day, from about 0400 Hours to 2000 Hours. Then the chickens go to their regular coop, while the turkeys are just hanging out in the yard now. Is 2000 Hours to 0400 Hours going to be enough time for the turkeys to eat their fermented feed, since it's overnight? They don't seem to care what time of day it is, they'll eat everything I give them.

Thanks in advance!

Why are you preventing your chickens from free-choice feeding? The only time that is really appropriate is if you are raising cornish-crosses, and then they need near constant access to pasture where they can forage.

When I was letting them free-choice feed, they were getting extremely fat and lazy, rarely leaving the food Hopper. By forcing them to forage during the morning, they appear to be healthier and far more active. We received better quality eggs by not leaving the commercial feed out, too.

Mid-afternoon, they all get a large batch of fermented feed as well as giving them any food scraps we have. Everything I have read had recommended doing this for the healthiest free-range flocks.

The reason for feeding at night when the birds are free range is to make sure they got enough while free ranging. And to save money on buying feed.
If the free ranging was good pick'ens then little supplement food is needed.

Unless you have the factory birds which would spend their life between the feeder and the water.

So my guess is you have the factory birds if they can't get enough food.

Check out this chart i posted on another thread.
It will tell you how much feed is needed.
