How to make a super neat chicken.

Mrs. AK-Bird-Brain :

Mr. Ree :

I have noticed that alot of people have a pen full of gorgeous birds of one breed. They are what the breed should be except in the color department. I have seen this alot with Silkies. And was just thinking how cool it would be to have a pen full of really good quality Cochin Bantams (frizzle and smooth of course) of all colors and just let them breed, and see what comes of it. Alot of neat and interesting colors would come from that pen. And I think I might just do that. See what cool colors of Cochins I can come up with. Now I just need tof ind the birds to do it with, lol!

I think this is why I like the Ameraucanas/EEs... no two are the same color, so the babies are spectacular and rarely the same!

My Ameraucanas are the same color.

My EE's are not.

I guess I should clarify... I have a blue wheaten roo Ameraucana with hens that are different colored Ameraucanas... black, white, wheaten, etc. Their EE offspring are different colors.

Speedy2020,

I'm not positive since I didn't get him until about 5 months ago, but my boy Mr. Vic (according to someone more knowledgeable than me) is likely a cross between a RIR and a Maran, most likely a Black tailed buff.

Illia mentioned getting some orange birds out of crosses with black coppers, so maybe she can weigh in on Vic. Personally, I don't think his level of coppery orange is boring... I think its stunning. But then again we are in Clemson country. Nothing better than a cock in a Clemson uniform (just in case there are any SC fans on here!!!).

As a quick note, I still don't have any eggs out of the 11 RIR hens at 20 weeks, no squatting, but a happy Vic finally got him some. Guess thats a good sign there close to laying?

Here is the photo of the BCM rooster x RIR hens look like. The one in the front is RIR and the 3 in the back are cross.

I don't exactly know which breeds for sure but I have my suspicion:

Blue Laced Red Wyandotte roo/ Partridge Rock hen or else these could be White Orpington roo/ Partridge Rock hen: Oh the hen could also have been a black australorp in this first picture.

These were hatched November 17th this year. The color pattern is strange since I don't have any barred chickens other than almost all the chickens that hatched out. It doesn't show up that well in the pictures but on their chests and some of them on the heads there is a little bit of white feathers mixed in. They are really good looking boys. The pullets are on the dark side but doesn't have the tan feathering on their chests or heads. Next year when they start laying eggs I am going to hatch out some of their eggs to see what I get out of them.

*I also have a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte/ New Hampshire mix chick from the same hatch date. This one also has the same pattern on its feathers.

I can't wait until the Buff Laced Brahmas are plentiful enough that I might have some beautifying my backyard flock!

They are beautiful as well as practical which is what I like. Thanks so much danpowell and the other breeders that devote years to developing these beautiful varieties and to improving the breeds!
