Best All-Around Chicken Breed?

I've never had Orpingtons, but I've had Australorps, which are somewhat similar. They're beautiful, big and have good temperaments. Good layers. I've also had BRs, and I'll never have them again. They were my meanest chickens (I had to re-home one), and their bluster doesn't match their laying ability. Definitely the weakest layers I ever had.

RIRs on the other hand - weather hearty, phenomenal layers, good temperament. I have nothing but RIRs now.

Keep investigating. If I ever do get another breed, it will be Buff Orpingtons based on what I've read and heard. I'm so happy with my RIRs though, I don't really have a reason to experiment with anything else.

I love my Barred Rocks. But they are not for everybody. They are very inquisitive, and they get bored easily, and they needs lots of room and things to keep them busy. If not they can start to get very grumpy with flock mates. They are great foragers, and they can even learn to hunt mice, worms, and small birds. Mine are in their second season of laying, and they still lay just about every day.
The Australorps are much more mild mannered. They aren't very active foragers. And not all of them are great layers. And mine go broody fairly often.

Well , we decided ! We got 28 Black Australorps , 6 Silver SeBrights , and 4 mutts ! ( sex link x BA! The sis are so curious and friendly . Very inquisitive ! The Ba are a bit skittish . They are all 4 days old and just so great to watch . Chose the BA for the all around utility , ease of care etc ! Have learned so much the past months reading the never ending info here ! Wonderful community !
