Found an Opposum in my Lilacs!!!

If you're really concerned, take him for a ride and drop him off a few miles away.
It is ILLEGAL to trap and relocate animals in most parts of the US. You risk exposing the local population to whatever diseases your "varmint" might be carrying.

In Wisconsin, the individual doing the relocating cannot release "nuisance animals" on DNR-maintained property (public land, wildlife management areas, etc.) Releasing anything on private land (any other kind of property not owned by some sort of governing agency) requires landowner permission. (See link for more information: http://dnr.wi.gov/topic/wildlifehabitat/documents/nuswlguide.pdf )

There are some individuals who operate animal damage control companies that take and release captured, nuisance wildlife onto private properties. There is a risk of spreading disease, as Rowsdower stated, but I think that risk is dependent on the distance the animal is moved, the species of animal in question, and the general health of the animal. For those who are not comfortable dispatching animals, taking legal steps to relocate the animal may be the best option for them, provided that the risks of moving that animal remain minimal.

In Michigan, trapped wildlife can be released on the same property, or with landowner permission on land within the same county. Nowhere else! Not on public land. There's no way to tell if the critter is actually healthy, only if it is really visibly ill. Relocated animals will try to return to their home, and usually die rather than have a nice life elsewhere. They are also trap savvy, and they love chicken, so they might find some other flock to harass, and be untrappable. Mary
