When do chickens lay?

Mine usually lay anytime before 10:00.  I wondered if that would be an issue ive been free ranging mine but they go back and forth from the barn to outside through out the day and our eggs are always in the nestboxes so when they lay they head back does any one elses chickens do this?

Most of mine lay in the nice nest boxes I made for them, but one insists on laying in a big flower pot in which I have a cactus growing. Her feathers must provide more protection for her than the hair on my arms provide for me!

We have one like that too! Pinkie Pie is currently laying in the box of hay we store in the run but I expect she will go back to her preferred patio chair as soon as we put out the cushions.

Most of mine do, we have two nest boxes for 8 hens but they all want to lay in which ever box the first one choose on any given day. This causes lots of needless (and loud) squawking
 
Mine did this. I would let them out around 10am and if they decided to lay, they would go back to their boxes. I never had any problems with them laying anywhere except their boxes but they are all different. As someone put it, they are like children. They can be trained but they can be stubborn too. The ones I have now are stubborn and are hard to train but I keep trying. Once my first one started to lay, they all followed suit. When the first one went back to the hen box, the others did this as well. They absolutely do teach each other what they learn from you. Also I had one hen that never laid until between 1pm and 5pm so I never knew what to expect out of her.
