Hi:

I have a chicken who survived a dog attack yesterday. It appears her only injury is a broken leg. My facebook friends are suggesting I splint it. I think the break is in the thigh. Is this possible? How would I do it?

Thanks

A vet told me with fractures on animals you need to immobilize the joints above and below the fracture site. Seems like that would be hard to do on the femur, if that's what you mean by thigh bone?

Yes, I'm thinking it's the femur. Below the feather part I don't see a break.

For future reference for anyone who needs it, I went to walmart and bought two finger splints and straightened them out. After putting gauze/and or nonstick pads on the leg, I put one of the splints on the front of the leg and one one the back then wrapped with medical tape. Works perfectly! The finger splints are lightly padded and and provide excellent support for the broken bone.I think I paid $2.98 for the pack of two. I will now keep them on hand in case I ever happen to have to splint a broken bone.

Thanks, alogue. I'll keep this in mind for future reference. My little hen healed up without a splint. I kept her inside for a few weeks to be sure she was fit to be with the flock, then put her out. She's still my little pet, though, and she knows it. She expects and receives favors the others don't get - like having her share of treats set aside for her so she doesn't have to scramble to get some. :)
