Hi, this is my first thread (besides my introduction), and the main reason I'm here. A predator is attacking my flock! I lost five chickens, two guinea fowls, and one muscovy duck. I initially thought some stray dog was killing them, but yesterday I spotted a "gato-do-mato" or "jaguatirica" (that's how we call them, I don't know their English names) roaming near my farm, it's a relatively small feline, but much larger than domestic cats, and with a more "wild" color pattern, their fur is kinda similar to the one of a leopard or a jaguar.

I have a dog, and he used to keep predators at bay, but he's almost 16 years old now. He spends most of his time sleeping and is partially deaf. He can't do anything against these wild invaders anymore.

I don't want to kill the feline, because it's of an endangered species, but it can overcome all my lines of defence! What should I do?

Do you keep your birds in a pen/coop or do they free range(run loose)? This makes a big difference. My chickens have to stay in their pen to keep them safe from predators. Do you have any pictures of your pen/coop? This may help.

So sorry for you loss!!

I don't have any images of my pen now, but I think I have some pictures in my older computer, I'll check it later. My chickens are kept in a pen most of time, but my muscovy ducks and guinea fowls run loose. Weirdly, as I said, most of the victims were chickens.

Trapping is a option, I'll talk to a hunter I know.

I discovered the "jaguatirica" is called "ocelot" in English.

I'm from Brazil.

Here's the only picture of my pen I found:

As you can see, the fence isn't very high... But I don't think it would stop such an agile feline.

wow that's a tough one. ocelots are like monkeys in trees too. If it was taking them at night, perhaps locking them in and having the whole coop covered in wire might help? Wonder if electric wire might help keeping it away?

Electric wire would certainly help, but I think I don't have enough money for it right now.
