Let's see your egg baskets!

I've been looking for just the right egg basket for weeks, and was so excited to see this one on clearance at Pier One today! It had a collection of colored citronella candles which I will also use inside.

I love that it is wire, I love that it is blue and I super love the lid to keep my dogs out when I set it down to get distracted by my chickens!

What do you use?

I use an old, plastic coffee can with the handles molded into it. Not pretty, but it came with the coffee.

I plan on buying a wicker basket at the thrift store for mine the good thing is that there are so many styles that I can pick and choose!

Right now we are only getting one egg a day so it seems a little silly to have a whole basket for just one. Maybe when the rest of the flock starts donating for their upkeep, I'll invest in a spiffy collection basket. xD

I use my shirt to collect them and I store them in a slotted box.

Funny story time....

While a kid in high school eons ago, we kept BR chickens. Lots of them. I sed my t shirt, pockets, whatever to collect the eggs. Sometimes I just piled them on my arms and dealt with it.

Then.....

I got a calf for FFA. Nice little heifer. We built a stall in the chicken yard and she used the extra shed for shelter. She grew. And grew. Pretty soon she was several hundred pounds and getting "frisky" as heifers will do when they get to a certain age. We moved her out of the chicken yard, but she still wanted all the attention she previously received. One day, she was feeling particularly amorous. While I was in the main coop collecting eggs, etc, not using an egg basket, she somehow got into the chicken yard. I came out of the coop with my arms full of eggs, and closed the door behind me with my foot. I turned around just in time to gete her knees in my chest as she licked my face, pinning me up against the coop door and smashing all the eggs I had in my arms.
By the time it was all done, there were no eggs unbroken that day.

The heifer went to auction 2 weeks later.

Now, I always use either a basket of a bucket to hold eggs. Even if I don't have love-struck livestock around....

Haha! I can just see it! That is a great story.. and I'll remember that, next time I want to buy a cow.. oh wait, I don't think that will ever happen!

But I have broken an egg or two trying to close the egg boxes and my dog is always interested in any that I set on the ground. Memama3, that is a fancy box! What a great idea! I'm looking to get one of those spiral egg skelters for mine.

Newbie32, I could have definately gotten a smaller one, as the max eggs that I get per day is 8, but I like the wire because every great once in a while, one has a little poop on it that needs to be washed. The wire will wash easier than the wicker. (just sumpin' to think about! )

I was thinking more on the lines of a wicker with a removable cloth in it. That way I can take the cloth out and wash it once a week.

QUESTION FOR ALL- who washes their eggs and who keeps them in basket on counter until ready to use?

Mine are unwashed and left on the counter for up to two weeks. After two weeks or if their super dirty, they get washed and put in the fridge.

That is pretty much what I was planning on too. My MIL always told me that you can keep eggs for months in an attic or the fridge. UMMMM I don't know if I could trust that but that's what she said her grandma did and her mom. Anywhere dry and cool . I did read that if you clean them and put mineral oil on them that they last longer-how long idk
