Hi, I'm new to this site, but I've noticed in the past that people had questions about African Pygmy Geese----I've had them for a number of years, if anyone has any questions about them, I'd be glad to help if I can

Wow! Those are beautiful!! I would LOVE to have some of those someday! Do they get along with other birds or do they need to be kept separate? Also, how much room do they need and what do you feed them? I`m sure it'll be years before I could ever get something like your Pygmy Geese, but I figure I might as well go-ahead and learn what I can now.

They really aren't that hard to care for, enclosure size is maybe about 15 by 15 by 8 high, as large a pond as you can make. These are birds that are almost always on the water or roosting above it, almost clumsy on land. We feed them parakeet seed and mazuri waterfowl maintenance or starter, and some greens, like kale. They can be somewhat aggressive toward other waterfowl and people even. We have two males that fly at your head every time you enter their pen. Because of the cost I wouldn't recommend keeping them with anything except maybe hottentot , or maybe ringed teal. They nest in elevated boxes so there might be a problem competing with ringed teal for nest boxes. They are very hard to raise or even get to breed in captivity.
 
Welcome to BYC ocdman. Great set up. Great family pic. Some of my favorite birds. I have a ton of questions. LOL! How many years have you had them? How many do you have at present? Do you live in south Florida? Do the males flying around your head get along well together during breeding or do they have to be seperated during breeding? Or are those also the same baby brother males now all grown up from your first pic? Congrats on those babies BTW. Where did you get your original pair from? Do you have any for sale now and if so how much? You can PM me if you dont want to answer some of these questions on the open forum. But either way more pics please! I just love em. Hi Shawn, we've talked before online----sw florida, we currently have 9 pair of them, only one pair has produced so far--------I think they are better in pairs, they will actually kill other pairs if given the chance, breeding season here is year round, and yes, the most aggressive are the ones we've raised here, they bite hard for such a small bird. I got my first breeding pair from Sylvan Heights Waterfowl, they were young birds, cost 3000.00 a pair, had them for approx 2 years before they produced anything, I'm thinking about selling a pair or two in the near future.

lol! I hope more pairs produce for you in the future. Though thats not what I wanted to hear about the meanness of them again. I sure was pulling hard for your offspring being alot more mellow and hey who knows maybe the next generations will be. Im keeping the faith . Regardless of what happens, I really respect your input and knowledge on these birds and truly hope I get to meet you and see your place one day if I can. Your photos always help with my addiction to these birds. Best of luck with the Pygmies and all your endeavours.
 
anyway. i do have a question about the african pygmies OCDMAN how long does it take them to reach maturty i know with egyptians they don't breed till their second year is it the same with african pygmies?
