And that boy of mine is less than 2 years old. They were thick. I should have done it much sooner, but his leg feathers hide the spurs and I didn't even notice they were so bad! (The girls should have told me! HAHA)

How old was that SFH rooster?

What method do you use to get them off so nice and intact?
I use a set of pliers. Grip the spur firmly. Rock back and forth and after a minute they will pop loose and slide off. You're gonna feel like you are going to break their leg but you won't. I would say you rock back and forth 8 or so times before they pop off. They bleed a drop or two so you want to seperate them for a day from the others afterwards.

I have my husband hold the birds. I tried by myself, but its much easier with help. Usually they don't bleed too bad, but that last one bled something horrible. Didn't have Quik Stop on hand, so I ran and got some corn starch. Held it on for a bit. Hubby finally sat him on the ground, and he walked right back to his pen like it was nothing. Within an hour, I saw him mating the girls.

he's 3.5 years. He kept throwing infertile eggs. That's when it dawned on me that his spurs were the problem

Just a thought... just read on a FB group of a gentleman who marks all of his egg boxes that are being shipped as HONEY because he says no one wants to clean up sticky honey in a post office hub! Said he's had great luck with them arriving in good condition. Interesting. Interesting concept, for sure! LOL

Only issue is that most damages are done by the machine sorters, not the people... marking the boxes actually makes very little difference, if they go through the machines without mishap then they're fine...
