Question about Male and Female Emus

I am so sorry to hear that it died , I have been pretty lucky ,I have had emu for 18 year and never had any get injured , I have had a neighbor's emu get injured really bad but I have a separate pen for the docile emu's if they are being bullied at all , then they get integrated back in at the right time it seems to work , just hate the fact that you had to lose one of yours . been think about you and what you have been going through ,

I have found there's really no rhyme or reason to who fights who.
I have females that don't like particular females or males ( usually the females are the worst to be dominant and territorial ) then I have males that don't like some other males or some of the females .
Then I have some females and males you would think are " homo's" lol.
Per males not liking some females, believe that or not but is true, even during breeding season .

If you keep them in a good size pen and have something they can run behind ( such as several trees, a building , big round bale of hay, etc. ) then that would help break up the attack but not a guarantee.
I always keep birds that are not familiar with one another in separate pens at first but with a common dividing fence line between them for a while before letting them run together, if their going to fight they are going to do it through that fence and you will have a pretty good idea what will happen once you put them together.

Sorry about your bird ES .

ES.... I'm so very sorry your Boy has passed away, perhaps for the better, it must have been a horrific attack, and if he had recovered, would probably have been very nervous and not even go to a female....they have such good memories.

I have also discovered, my younger Emu Pair , the girl Jasmine won't allow a 1 year younger girl to join the 2 , I saw a big chunk of feathers in their paddock in spring, not realising at the time where it came from.
Then saw Jasmine chasing Cindy through 3 large paddocks and pecked Cindy. I took her out at once, she was not injured and she has now a large field to herself with Llama , Rheas, Turkeys and bantams for company just nearby. She is very happy and spoilt rotten ...chasing wild rabbits and even killed a big rat this week. So all my boundaries are now guarded with Emus from fox, nuisance wild rabbits and rats. and the allotment right in centre of them all.

Oh, so sorry. What a horrible thing to have happen.

I have one girl penned alone because she was being chased and kicked by the others. I may try moving one of the boys in with her again to see how it goes.

Along the same line...I hatched an emu 2 years ago, male. Hatched another in March and just found out it's a male also. Will they get along with no others? Should I try to find a female or get rid of one of the males? Anyone near Pensacola have emus? Thanks

I found they got along well until puberty, then became aggressive with one another. Formed a pecking order and the sr bothered the jr so much he'd jump fences to get away.
We've gotten rid of them all, and won't do emus again until we find a pair.
Dogs got along with them fine, even though the emus would try to hump them (craziest thing you've ever seen)... Alpacas hated the emus. Emus hated (and tried to attack at every chance) the cows.
