Giving her metronidazole won't hurt her I don't think.

I doubt that they would have it unless they carry lots of stuff for pigeons. You might find it at a tropical fish store, or a pigeon breeder near you might have some, but most people buy it online.

My girl has the yellow substance in the back of her mouth as well and we have been to a specialized bird vet twice where they cleaned it out but did not mention it being canker. They did take a swab to test for "Trick" (common pigeon disease) and it came back negative for that. They didn't have a good answer for what it was so I was happy to come across this post and feel a bit more helpful that its treatable and not cancer like I was thinking. The vet did give her Trimethoprim (antibiotic) to give to her for 2 weeks and she did perk up but I've noticed in the last 2 days she's slowing down again and not able to eat and the yellow substance is still in the back of her throat. I tried doing some online research to see if there is a difference between the other antibiotic mentioned in an early response: Metronidazole vs Trimethoprim and they look and treat similar infections but after reading the post here, I think I'll try an anti fungal treatment instead. Which type mentioned previously can I purchase over the counter: Fish Mox? thanks!
