Hi everyone, this morning i found my self jumping out of bed to save my four chickens from two dogs, but there's only so much you can do with two hands :( i managed to only save one. (Something ill feel guilty for forever) so after bawling for a few hours, i knew that i couldnt leave my one chicken alone, and it needs a few new friends. 1) Where should i get them, middle aged chockens? And 2) How long can my chicken be left alone in a coop without going insane? thank you so much for reading, ill appreciate any opinion or anything you have.

A secure pen makes all the difference. If dogs can get on your property, you need to put up better fencing to prevent that from happening. 6' no-climb woven wire works well, or an electric fence.

In your run (If you have one) you can put a roof on the top so they can't get over it. If dogs can get in I would keep your chicken somewhere safe. (Like in a garage or a porch or somewhere where the dogs can't get in. On the subject of new ones I would look right here on BYC!

Even with a roof dogs will dig under or break right in if it's chicken wire. I agree with Michael Apple re the woven wire and hot wire. We use both, works like a charm.

As far as where to obtain adult birds? You'll have to check around near you, ask at feed stores etc. Some of them buy from local breeders. I honestly have a pretty dim view of buying adult birds except from breeders with excellent reputations. A lot of people knowingly and unknowingly sell unthrifty or downright sick birds at auctions and on places like Craigslist, The chances of bringing home nasty diseases is just to high for me personally.

I'm so sorry to hear. Last year I lost 21 of my chickens to a fox. Only 3 hens survived. I have since then got new ones so it's all good. You can try craigslist. There is usually some people trying to sell or get rid of some hens there. Usually always some free roosters. For now just give her lots of love and attention and she will be okay. If you know whose dogs they are you can ask the owner to keep them tied up or something. Hope I helped and I hope that you find a solution.
P.S. Who ever did the S.S.S thing GET A HEART would ya!!!

Now, you can't be hypocritical. You lose 21 chickens to a fox, then get new ones and say ,"It's all good". To those 21 birds killed by a fox it wasn't. You then tell someone who recommends shooting a dog to "have a heart". Both of you are wrong in both cases since it is your fault if a dog gains entrance to your property and kills your birds, and the owner of the dog's fault for being an irresponsible idiot. And since you cannot shoot the owner, and the dog is tagged, animal control can be notified and will fine the owner. In the case of fox, coon, coyote, etc., perhaps if more people practiced preventative methods regarding predators, like fences, or trapping and culling to keep predator populations down, you wouldn't lose so many birds.

Thank you so much, and to you, so sad :( a dog dug underneath our coop to get in ! Good thing my brother heard or we wouldve gone out to collect eggs and saw a blood bath. I actually just got new ones! I know, quick right ! And thank you again!!

I was only trying to help. And what I meant by "it's all good" is that it happened a long time ago and that that even though I lost them, I was able to buy new chicks with new colors and personalities and the others are in a better place. And I know that loosing them is hard, but you can always buy new guys. Whoever said to shoot it shovel it and shut up I was just implying that that was a bit rude to say to somebody who just lost their chickens. I was jar trying to make Them feel better. If I said something to sound hypocritical I appologise.
