I'm about to move to the Arden-Arcade area and I'm having trouble believing that I can't have chickens. I live in a duplex with a fairly sizable back yard (20x30ft), yet it says I can't have chickens? Anyone have a similar experience or advice with this? I'm only looking at having a small 20 sqft coop and maybe 3 chickens.

Well first make sure your neighbors are alright with the chickens. If the neighbors oppose it then its likely they WILL turn you in. However if the neighbors are alright with the chickens you really shouldn't have any trouble. Id ask each neighbor on the sides of your yard and behind you. If they Are alright with it you really shouldn't have any trouble. Trouble comes when neighbors complain. That's when the city gets involved.. I'm just making a suggestion.it only makes. Good since to have your neighbors on your side. Hope this helps

Hi Chicken person in Arden Arcade. The first thing you have to know is that your County Supervisor, Susan Peters, initiated a ban on all crowing fowl in Sacto county. If this passes Oct 30, 2015 nobody will be allowed to have any crowing fowl on any residential property regardless of lot size. She claims to have been awakened at 3 AM by a peacock that sounded like a baby being strangled. So, now she's at war with roosters, etc. She lives in your area and I'm fairly certain she is in a foul mood about the subject of fowl. I attend her coffee meetings here in Fair Oaks Village where people have been dumping their unwanted chickens (particularly roosters) for years. With the advent of all of the municipal rooster bans in the incorporated areas of the county, our rooster population has more than doubled. Needless to say, we Fair Oaksians are not too sympathetic about those who complain about crowing. Try waking up to 100s of them each morning! I urge you to read some of my posts on other Sac County threads to get updated on the current code changes.

I am not sure about your lot size, but you need 10,000 square feet to own chickens period. I believe the code states that those who live in duplexes and apartments are not allowed to keep chickens in Sac County. Good luck.

IT'S TIME TO SPEAK UP OR GIVE UP YOUR CROWING FOWL

Once this zoning change becomes finalized, it isn't going to be easy to get our property rights returned. If you zoned (AR), Ag Residential, you may not be as safe from this ban as you think. Roberta MacGlashan the District 4 Supervisor, (see map:http://www.bos.saccounty.net/District4/Documents/District4Map.pdf was talking about applying the ban to your residential zoning category as well. And what other animals or livestock are they going to ban next? Also, please note that other zoning changes were voted on regarding pens, coops, fences, walls, etc.

The Sacto County Supervisors want to see an angry hoard (so to speak) as Serna hinted at during the July 22nd meeting. Don't give up your male fowl or your property rights! We are asking anyone interested in attending a planning meeting to send me a private message. Please include your zip code and dates/times you are available and we'll figure out a location/date/time that fits everyone's needs as best we can.

The Supervisors will revisit the crowing fowl section of their zoning amendments “tentatively” on:
Wednesday October 28, 2015, 2:30 PM to 6:00 PM, Board Chambers, 700 H Street, 1st floor, in Suite 1450, Sacramento, CA 95814.

Contact: Kevin Romo, 916-874-8178 to confirm meeting agenda, date/time.

OR
Call, write, email, tweet or Facebook all five Supervisors and tell them
what you think.
