Someone told us to put a pan full of that SEVEN DUST in the run for the chickens to take a dust bath in to keep from getting or gettting rid of mites, Has anyone ever heard of this or do you do it?

If you do a search for sevin dust you will get many answers. It is a very controversial subject. Personally, I wouldn't do it. Too many health risks in my opinion.

Having an animal bathe in a pesticide just seems like a bad idea. I don't think I would want to eat eggs from them

Just FYI, to make searching easier, it's spelled "Sevin" dust. If you're eating your hens' eggs, be aware that there will be traces of the chemical in the eggs that you eat.

We use a natural dusting powder.

It is from www.theholistichorse.com

They have stuff for all critters.

Chickens do a great job with the bugs if they have a stop of loose dirt to clean themselves in.

I heard that if you put the ashes from a wood stove, that works too. We are going to do that in their outdoor pens when they are cooped up.

The use of Sevin dust is controversial if you call it Sevin Dust.

There is a product called "Poultry Lice and Mite Killer" that comes in a cardboard cylinder. You can get it from your feed store.

Its the same thing as Sevin, its just "labeled" for use on poultry.

I use a product called Viper Dust and the brand name is Marthas I believe. Its carbaryl powder with 5% Permithian in it. It also mentions poultry on the label. I dont believe in all the "organic" ways, so the chemicals dont bother me.

"Poultry Houses, Farm Buildings
For Northern Fowl mite, fleas and bed bugs: Apply 1.25 kg of powder per 10 square metres. Use a scoop to scatter by hand or apply by a hand duster.

Hand Application To Chickens And Domestic Birds
For Northern Fowl mite, chicken mites, lice and fleas and fowl ticks: Use 500 g of powder per 100 birds by means of a shaker can, squeeze bottle or hand duster. Direct dust to vent and fluff areas. Repeat in 4 weeks if necessary.

Hand application to birds for chicken mites and fleas is a supplement to litter treatment for control of these pests. Allow 7 days between application to poultry and premises and bird's slaughter.

Precautions
Keep Out Of Reach Of Children And Animals
Avoid contamination of feeding and watering troughs. Avoid contamination of feedstuffs. Do not breathe dust. Do not take internally. Avoid unnecessary contact. Wash hands before eating. "
