best pea variety for newbie

I want to start with a pair or trio of peafowl. I have read that India blues are the easiest to tame. I love the look of the greens but what I have read says they are much wilder than the blues. What about the hybrids? I know that Indian blues are the easiest to find but are the other varieties able to be tamed as well?
Also, does anyone have any young birds available ? I am in N. CA but would be willing to pay for shipping and a box if peas ship ok. I have shipped chickens before but do not know how well peafowl do when shipped.

A pied, a white and an indian blue split to white( means one parent is white and one parent is indian blue) will give you a nice selection of chicks or eggs.

Zazouse, your birds are BEAUTIFUL!!!! If I had a trio of the varieties you suggested, does it matter which color is the male?

I would try for a pied male but sometimes ya got to take what ya can get, my pied hen bred with my split white Indian blue and all her chicks were pieds, he bred my whites and I got whites and split white Indian blues.

I agree with what Zazouse said. In fact I wish I had started my collection with that kind of assortment (that is a great recomendation Zaz) but like what Zazouse mentioned sometimes you have to take what you can get. Also like what Zaz said, it will be very fun seeing all the different color peachicks.

The India Blues and their varieties - (pied, white, peach, etc...) are easier to tame and definitely more recommended to start with.
Green peafowl are endangered so in my opinion they should be something you get after you get used to raising an India Blue variety for many reasons...They can be more wild because they are not as domesticated as the common peafowl yet they can be tamed down. Some people say their greens freak out if they go into the pen wearing a different outfit every day. To me that just sounds like the birds need more socializing with people to calm down but who knows. Also greens can be harder to breed and they should not be free-ranged. Another very important thing is that it can be hard to find pure green peafowl. There are a lot of people out there selling Spaldings (a hybrid between the green and blue peafowl) as pure green birds. To get green peafowl you should research who has the pure birds and know how to recognize the pure ones vs. the hybrids. Sometimes this is easier said than done.You can get cheated if you don't know how to tell the difference because you could pay a lot of money (pure greens do get costly) for a bird that the seller "says" is pure when really it should be a lot cheaper because it is just a Spalding. Normally the people with the best green peafowl are the people who have birds that are imports or have Rodney Michael blood line greens. I could babble on and on about green peafowl because I want to breed them someday. I really want to help conserve them but I am so very weary about who I want to get my greens from. This means a lot to me and I am not saving up my money for something that isn't the real deal. I have some more green peafowl info if you are interested in them:

Peafowl ship good I got mine shipped last year from Indiana to Montana....they were 4 months old. Breeders usually wait until peas are about 3 months old so they can handle being shipped. The united peafowl assoc. website has a good list of breeders, and some may be near you.

There are quite a few active members here that are from Cali mabe you will be close to you.

I have some tame (will sit in your lap and eat treats, but don't like to be cuddled, lol), fat and healthy chicks that have never touched the ground, but I know nothing about shipping.
