I had my 1 yr old peacock die,

was using the "wazine" and ivermectin ( injected 0.5ml in between shoulders every 3 mo.) thinking I was doing great worming everything. So my male died and I started researching the cause. I gave all peahens and turkeys 0.5ml safeguard in throat just like suppose to. I am a nurse so I used the end connector from a O 2 tubing and a Insulin syringe to get pass the trachea. QUESTION??? If I used safeguard orally, do I need to use it orally again ? or can I put it in the drinking water in the 10 days to follow? I put it in the water so all animals would get safeguard for 3 days.... So if I use it by mouth do I re-give by mouth in 10 days /or give in water x3 days then re-give in 10 days? Will it work by mixing dose? I have been thinking I did it wrong. Please advise, any thoughts appreciated.
 
I am a bit confused here, did your peacock die after you wormed him even though you are a nurse and know you did it right?

Yes you can mix it with water, gallon changed out daily for 3 days, but I put mine in scrambled eggs to assure my birds get the meds cause they are not penned and I have no control over where they drink as I have ponds here.
So sorry for your loss, there are not many here that have not lost at least one pea after having them for a while seems like they are prone to lots of stuff.
 
Sorry He was sick and after 4 days He died....I gave him all kinds of meds I fed him by hand, etc... DH said I gave him too much care and killed him (in a loving way) Free range and I never thought about the worming program was not working until I got on BYC.I started the safeguard 2 days after he died, and the 1st dose went down throat,2nd dose 10 days later I put in water. So do I need to re- worm them in 10 days after the straight dose with the diluted dose or give the straight dose? or does it matter as long as they get medicated? I sure don't want another dying because I didn't do enough. But do not want to over dose either.
 
I would re-dose after the 10 days,and you can put it in their water for 3 days. I think it is 3 ml per gallon. Safeguard is safe and hard to overdose. I even use it to worm my dog.

Per my avian vet my peafowl and other poultry get fenbendazole 10% (Safeguard or Panacur, liquid or paste) at 50mg/kg by mouth and repeat in ten days, that's .5ml per 2.2 pounds.

This is what I just wormed:
  • Yearling peahens around 3kg got 1.5 ml
  • Yearling peacocks around 4kg got 2 ml
  • Adult peahens around 4kg got 2 ml
  • Adult peacocks around 6kg got 3 ml
  • Huge turkeys hens got 8ml

Many do put it in the water, but there is no guarantee that they will get enough to do any good, IMO.

This is what I needed Thank you very much. Now I have more reading to do. Then I will need to find metronidazole to keep on hand. I did not give the turkeys and peafowl enough safe guard the 1st time, but maybe they got enough the 2nd time. I will definitely worm again in Feb.

When you put the safeguard in scrambled eggs do you just mix it in after the eggs are cooked? I will have to dose their treats somehow to ensure everyone gets dosed since there are too many water sources i can't control but they do come when called for treats every day...
 
Another thing you can do in between wormings is use natural methods that work well for keeping worms out of your peas. Squash, cabbage, and cayenne pepper can help kill worms but to be safe also use a chemical dewormer. I do both so I can be extra careful when it comes to avoiding disease.

Hate to be negative, but probably not a good idea to count on that sort of stuff killing worms. No harm in feeding it, but I seriously doubt it will help. If you have links to any studies that prove they work, I would love to see them. :D
