My sons 2 year chicken project destroyed by dogs.

So I get a frantic call urging me to come home as my son and wife are fighting off a couple "bully breed" dogs. I am not a dog hater we have a nice bully breed of our own. However they attacked my flock killing all but one bird right in front of my son and wife. They were able to chase them off and were luckily not attacked themselves. I arrived home to my son holding one of the last dying hens begging me to save her.
We started this project with 2 at risk kids that were living with us. It gave them something to care about other than themselves and their problems. It worked well. Our hopes were to be fully organic and supply our family with organic eggs. It has gone really well and we loved the birds and the eggs.
Animal control caught the dogs, they were roaming the local grocery store a mile away. (looking for more chicken?) We identified them and they assured us that they would be fined. They did mention that they would need to pay restitution. How do you put a price on hard work, loss of the hens, no organic eggs for over a year, my sons hobby destroyed, and the trauma and stress of witnessing his pets being killed? I dont blame the dogs, they do what is natural. But their owners need to be accountable.
How do I put a price on this?

I'm sorry to hear about this. It's one of those things you cannot truly put a price on...

However, starting again with motivation for protection, and either new hens to name or chicks to watch grow may be what your son needs..? I would give it a try, especially if you're after organic eggs.

Well, how much did the hens cost?
How much food did you put into them, cost wise?
Did you pay medical expenses for any of them?

I'd add up those charges, which should average to ~20 a bird (depending on age and such), and then add an emotional value.
So I'd say $40 per bird. But, of course, keep in mind if the owners are struggling. I'd hate to have to go through this, and I'm so sorry for you loss,but I know the feeling of struggling, and if they are, then $40 per bird would be a huge cripple.
Just, try to be fair but you need your money back.

So what do I do with the lone hen if she survives? Wil there be a problem with her being alone? Can she survive the cold without her cooperates? Should I take her to another flock? Kind of lost right now as what to do.

Well, do you want to get more chickens? If so, get some more full grown hens. Otherwise, she'd probably be better off in another flock.

So sorry for such a huge loss! We've had these 2 dogs coming from like a mile or more away, trying to kill our chickens. They manage to only pull out feathers. They are young and bored, I can tell. But again, so sorry. I hate it when they do it for fun...

If they are layers, don't forget to add in lost income while you wait on new ones to grow to layer size. And, depending on where you live, the dog owner will have no choice but to pay.

They are lucky their dogs are not dead. Some places, such as OH, say that during an attack on livestock the dog is a target. Dog owner can not even come after you financially for the loss of their dog and are totally responsible for all damages. I love our dogs but if any dog attacks livestock, it will be put down quickly and permanently.

Same in Missouri, Dog goes away. I love Dogs and own three, But live stock killers are not tolerated.
