My sons 2 year chicken project destroyed by dogs.

Our last hen died the next day. And I talked it over with my son and he wants to start with chicks again this spring. He feels that they will be more friendly if he raises them from chicks.
The dogs just got turned over to the owners the same day. The courts decide the values based on what I ask for. There is no livestock law or value set on chickens. So I will make up a value and see what happens.

I'm sorry for your loss. In determining value, you need to consider replacement cost of similar age and quality birds. If you were selling eggs or even using them for yourself, you could include that. Most people have found that the pocket is where most bad dog owners feel the need to change.

I've lost some chickens to local roaming dogs. Actually twice, to the same dogs. I live in a rural area and the dog's owner compensated me $100 for an 8 month old hen and roo that his dog killed the second time. My hen was on the verge of going broody and the roo was going to be my keeper. The dog owner understood the implications of that. I didn't ask for compensation the first time but I called the sheriff's office the second time (4 months after the first) and filed a complaint.

The dog came through 10 acres of pasture until they got to my chickens. Luckily I was home and was able to scare them off before further damage was done. Unfortunately, the dog wasn't close enough for me to shoot it, I would have. I have a love/hate relationship with dogs, now... I worked in animal shelters for years but after having witnessed the brutality of roaming dogs and the suffering of my birds (that I raise for meat) I will be much more likely to shoot first and worry later or not at all about what the dog was doing here. This is legal in my area but I would advise asking local law enforcement what is okay.

Again, I'm sorry for your loss. But I would certainly ask for the maximum compensation so that the dog owner is less likely to allow his animals out unsupervised.
