Call Duck "Man" parts

I have a male call duck, about 4-5 years old. Today I noticed his "manhood" hanging out (which isn't unsual), but upon closer inspection, when I picked him up, I notice that the last 1/4-3/4 inches of his penis was black, scabby looking, and crusty to the touch. Almost looks like frostbite (though we haven't had a freeze here yet). Anybody have any idea what could be going on? I tried to take pictures, but they all came out unfocussed.

This is phallus prostration. I will guess that his phallus has not been properly retracted for some time. This can lead to death of the tissue.

I would get to a vet if possible. If not, let him swim in lukewarm water for a while and see if some of that dead tissue will slough off. I would look in the archives for information about what to put on it. And I would think about whether to decide what kind of antibiotics to use if there is infection, and if it appears it may have entered the bloodstream.

Drakes can live just fine after this, if it is well cared for. But he definitely needs your help and some veterinary care.

There is another name for it but I can't remember what it's called, any way it's a prolapse usually for using his penis too much for mating. and sounds like it maybe infected, you need to bring him in and let him be in a luke warm bath to soak and then dry as best you can so you can really look at this wrap him in a towel to keep him still if you need to, if infected he may have to go to a vet and be treated, but go ahead and use some neosporin or tripe antibiotic and spread it all over it,. He needs to be kept away from the girls and if he makes it through he'll have to be away from them for at least 2-3 months or it will keep happening. This can be serious so treat it as such. Sometimes vets can cut off infected part and it will heal on it's own. others have done it themselves but I don't recommend the latter. Just start treating ASAP. also may want to consider an oral antibiotic if you don't notice it responding to treatment or if vet care isn't an option. Sometimes the infected part will fall off on it's own but he needs to be kept clean and dry till completely healed.and keep the neo or tripe on it to keep it moist as possible and at least 1X a day warm baths

it is prolapsed and if unattended for it will cause infection in the bloodstream... this is not uncommon with calls and possibly can still breed depending on agressiveness... dont know how comfortable you are about it but it needs to be cut off... you can take medical scissors and dip in alcohol then go just about the dead tissue and quick snip put antibiotic ointment on it or give some baytril by injection or by mouth. but once off and you lubricate it you need to make sure it retracts either by pushing it in or he will do it himself.... it does not bleed much so that you wouldnt have to worry about.

Well, I took the plunge. We don't have any vets around here, and couldn't afford them if they were. I got my son to help me hold the duck while I washed off the phallus as best I could and then cut off just above the black-dead end. Little guy didn't even quack, but then it started to bleed and I was hurriedly putting neosporin on it and it was still bleeding and I was crying and my son was crying, and I did my best to get it as covered with the cream as I could. Then we put him on the ground and he waddled with the others back into his pen. Could hardly sleep all night wondering if he was bleeding to death. Went out this morning, resolved to have to deal with a corpse, but there we was, just walking around quacking like nobody's business! Will put some more cream on him this afternoon and take a closer look at how things are "down there". Keep your fingers crossed with me! Thanks for the help and advise.!! Kudo's to you and son for doing this and thank goodness he made it. Now you need to keep him from mating with the girls I was told 3 months to keep this from happening again. Beautiful drake.
