Chicken diapers - He's mostly given up..

we are having a problem with our experiment in trying on a chicken diaper on our Roo. He's a mixed breed, a really pretty boy, Half bard half Amaracana. We aren't really allowed to have Roo's in the city/town. But we don't want to send him back to our friends farm (who's got no chickens at this time.) and decided to try on a chicken diaper for him.

As expected he walked around funny and we had to do several refitting and seemed to have made it fit.
But he seems to have given up on even moving around it for the most part and simply lays on the ground either with his but in the air and his beak in the ground or slightly on his side.
When he dose he stumbles around like a frantic drunk.

But we can't figure out what we are doing wrong.
To tight?
To lose?

Now... do to another incident with this kind of questions...
What I don't want...

- Questions on why I want to keep the Roo
- a lecture on what I SHOULD (IN your opinion) Do with the roo
- anything that doesn't have to do with THIS topic.

What I do want...
- Ideas on the problem
- Suggestions to help fix the problem.
- General observation and questions about what we did and how we did it.
Thats about it.
As of now I can't find any other sight that gives me more info, more Knowledge or help then what I've already seen. and this praticuler problem dosn't seem to be addressed.

Day 1 - Chicken daiper.

Tiring. A lot of refitting and frustration from trying to get it to fit properly, Whatever way that is.

Got one more design to try but we waited for the next day, seems to have worked.


Day 2 - Chicken diaper.

So far he seems to be doing okay with it though still walked around funny when we put it on this morning. And then put it on again after I'd taken it off again.

So I guess he still has some adjusting to do but other wise seems to work. After his anital annoyance he walks normally again. (about an hour?) But still seems kinda of ruffled.

Day 3 - chicken diaper.

Its still working. But every time we put it on he goes into another 'pout' and simply sits there for a while or starts walking backwards.
Other then that everything seems okay.

How does the diaper sit on him? Like, does it go between his legs and straps over his wings?

The strap my mother thinks is a little wide but yes it goes between his legs.
The straps go over his wings and then we snapped both sides together to keep them on his back.
They don't seem overly tight or loss, but he holds one wing out a little more then the other.
When he falls foreword his feet get caught on the strap at his belly and he either stumbles around or slips out of it.

I had the same problem when making my first chicken diaper and had to remake it a few times. When my Silkie started stumbling on the bottom fabric strap/piece I made it slimmer (the top and bottom fabric peices), which seemed to work. The third time I made it, I also used lighter material, which my Silkie liked. What kind of material are you using?

An old Army rain coat.

So you suggest we use something lighter? with a smaller strap?

I might not be that helpful with chicken diapers, I made more of a chicken "vest". Anyways I used the inside of the swimsuit and made it a bit curved/skinnier in the middle of the bottom piece, it looked like this:

Interesting.

My dad just modified the strap and made it smaller.
But I think we are going to give poor sarg a brake to night and try again tomorrow
I'll report then how it works.

well so far the adjustments seems to have worked, so far.
He's got his balance and can fly up a short ways.

But he's still pecking at it, seems a little akwerd and pecks and pulls at the pouch at the back.
Is this normal to?

Got a pic of him wearing it?
How often does it need to be 'changed'?
Is this for him to live inside 24/7 or does he go outside during the day?

Will it keep him from properly preening...might be why he's picking at it?
May just take time for him to get used to it.

No I don't have any pictures at the moment.
and it should be changed a few times a day (Once you get it one right) depending on how much that praticuler chicken poops.

WE arn't sure yet if we are keeping him inside 24/7 or well let him outside with the girls for a little. Eather way he's a roo and not realy allowed as a backyard chicken.
Preening properly it maybe, and its possible he still needs to get used to it.
Since this is our first time trying it we are still... experimenting.
