Coops built into larger buildings

A friend of mine just bought a new house, and on the property is a pretty big shed, which as two pop holes built into it. It looks like at one time it housed chickens.

He was going to use part of the inside as a chicken coop, connected to the pop hole, and keep some of the rest of the shed for storage.

Who else had done this? Can you link photos? Got any good advice?
 
The only super big thing to remember is that chickens make lots of dust.

If dust is an issue then make sure the two sdes are completely sealed off from each other.
 
Ventilation is also critical, your friend will have to make sure there are plenty of air vents, this can be done by putting in opening windows that have chicken wire/hardwarecloth around them so that preditors can't get in.

I did just that, with full knowledge of the dust issue.....
.....which I hopefully won't regret in the future.

Nice coop aart! That is exactly what we are looking for. I didn't think of the dust problem but that makes sense.

This is a good place to have a coop because it already has power.
 
I built my coop into a corner of a 1200 sq. ft. metal pole barn, it's just frames with poultry netting, not sealed off. I have four hens and believe it or not those four little birds make a TON of dust and fluff in the immediate area surrounding the coop. But if I sweep and shop vac about once a month I'm on top of it and the rest of the barn stays pretty clean.

So tell your friend if he's not into cleaning often, make sure to seal the coop up and add venting to the outside. ;)
