Show me your Nest Boxes!

Mine are built into the side of the coop. I can collect eggs from either the outside or inside of the coop.

Nothing elaborate here. I am also such a "sand fan" that I use it everywhere, including the nest boxes. LOL

These are one, divided into two. It sits on cement blocks on the ground and the birds step up into them.

I have a communal box, one large box for 8 hens. It's 4 ft. long and we've had as many as 4 girls in there laying at the same time. The back of it opens so that we can collect eggs from outside. I used to have separate boxes but they'd all fight over the same one. Figured I'd give them one big box and let them sort it out.

This is the box when it was first built.

This is the box when loaded with straw and with 2 curtains [aka garden flags] in place. I've since changed to pine shavings and it has 4 curtains, covering the entire box.

And, yes, the girls still fight over their favorite spot in the box!

Thanks everyone! My coop is small so i'm leaning towards an exterior communal nesting box by cutting a hole in the wall. My next question.. I have larger Chickens (Orps, Jersey Jiant, etc).. how big of a nest (IE how tall) should it be? My Jersey's so big she hardly fits in the current nest box (Milk Crate).

How many hens do you have?

I have 6.

4 Orpingtons (28 - 30 weeks), none have laid yet
1 Jersey Jiant (1.5YR),
1 White Leghorn (2YR)

I may be getting 2 more Orpington crosses.
Orps and Giants are large fowl. So build your boxes somewhere at least 15x15x15 or so. Any smaller that they will really mangle up their tail feathers. :)
