Golden Sex Links mating with mutt rooster

Hello:

I have 4 Golden Sex linked hens and a mutt rooster. I just have them for egg production not for showing. I was hoping to get some chicks next year but the local feed store tells me it won't work, that they will not produce viable eggs.

Anyone has some info as to why not?

Some folks see the word "hybrid" with the sex link birds and think they're a species hybrid that is sterile, like a mule. Sex link chickens are NOT sterile, but that seems to be a persistent rumor. Course, then folks hear sex links don't breed true, and somehow in their brains that translates to they can't breed. Sex links, male or female, reproduce just like any other chicken. Your hens will breed just fine with your rooster. They're not so likely to go broody, so you'll probably have to incubate eggs and brood chicks. You'll have classic Barnyard Mix chicks, depending on your rooster you'll have a variety of colors and egg laying abilities.

If sex links couldn't reproduce, I wouldn't have half my flock lol. My head rooster for 4 years was a black sex link rooster, gave me the prettiest babies!
 
Thank you both for the replies. Sounds good. Our Romeo may be a mutt but he is gorgeous and such a gentleman with his girls and us. He should make pretty babies and good natured too.

He is pretty! I'll bet you have such pretty chicks from them. Do you have plans for your 50% roosters you're going to hatch?

I'm trying not to think about this too much. I couldn't eat them. We got our rooster free with the pullets we bought at the feed mill. I'm hoping the feed mill will take the male chicks to give away to new chicken owners. We live in a rural area and kids have a lot of animal pets. Roosters and their crowing aren't a problem in the country as the houses are far apart. I'd only want to hatch a few to make up for the hens diminishing productivity. I just hope they're not all roosters.

My husband and I had never had chickens before and we got them for the eggs. It was such a lovely surprise to realize that they make wonderful pets, no birdbrains these cuties. The drawback from having gotten them as pullets is that they had not been socialized and although they follow you around and eat from your hand, they won't let you pick them up. That's one of the reasons I'm hoping to have our own chicks.

not for everyone, I know. I just like to bring it up when folks talk about hatching chicks, cause they're gonna happen, and folks need to have a plan.
 
I couldn't eat the ones we have now, they're all named and are treated as pets. I could eat non pets but the problem is I couldn't kill them. May be I'll toughen up if it becomes necessary.
