Parakeets alone or a pair?

If you plan on taming start with one you can always get another after it is tamed. If you get two its a lot hard to tame them. Since none of mine are tame and I don't care for them to be mine live in a flock. :)

We always had a parakeet when I was a kid. They never lived more than 2 years. They do better in pairs or flocks. In the wild they are colony birds. Even if they are the same sex it's better. However, it is true a single bird is better for taming. I had one that was very smart. He would sit on my book while I was reading. He could speak sentences plainly. I was young in an apartment so I couldn't have cats or dogs. I got a hamster. The parakeet was jealous and one day when I opened the door he flew out and I never saw him again. He was very possessive.

They should live much longer than 2 years!!!! Average 5 - 8 years.

I am so glad you got 2.

They are highly social birds... a single bird will have a very miserable life, unless the human owner is there with it every day all day. Someone who has a job, or has to go to school, will not be able to give enough time.

You will get much more enjoyment from 2 birds......watching them play together, and chase each other about. They are much more lively kept in pairs of groups and are so interesting to watch.

Its not true that 2 are harder to tame.

It it true that they won't bond to you like you are their mate.

But they will get tame and love to hang out and play with you like you are their friend or a member of the flock.

What colours did you get?

I have 11 budgies at the moment.

I think the males make the best pets. The females can bite hard and get in bad moods, also they are more destructive and like chewing stuff like you furniture.

The males are more lively and sing more.

Make sure you give them vegetables and fruits, as well as some hard boiled egg sometimes.

If they only eat dry seed they will get sick and die as they lack all the vitamins and minerals they need for long healthy life.

Enjoy you new pets!!!

I have at times tried to get my parakeets to eat other things but they would only eat seed. The seed is fortified with vitamins. It does bother me though that I'm paying for a lot of seed they don't like. Years ago I used to go to a feed store where I could get canary and millet separately. I also used to add some hulled oats. I know you're supposed to give them grit but mine never touched it. Some of them did like it when I dug up a chunk of grass and put it in the cage. They tore it up. I don't suppose I need to warn you not to give them grass that has been sprayed with anything. I've had parakeets live for 12 years.

Budgies dont need grit.....they dehaul their seeds. It can cause an impact crop. Grit is for birds that dont dehaul their seeds. :)
