BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Humor a newby if you don't mind: In what way does form follow function with Sussex? This is one of the breeds I'm planning to start with.
They haven't been on since 2016

I don't think any real breede would purchase birds thinking they are at "the end point" no matter who they purchased from.

Breeding is never totally perfected and most real breeders understand that if you arent improving you are back sliding. There is no such thing as keeping a line stable. Either strive to improve or gradually lose it..
I've had my Columbian Wyandotte since May of 2011. The Columbian color pattern can be maintained by selective breeding. Using the Standard of Perfection as a guide for form and expected quality of meat and egg production, I've been able to successfully maintain the breed. Not all birds are show birds, not all are breeders to continue the strain.
This year I have hatched over 600 chicks and have gone thru several culling processes with each hatch. Now I have 125 juveniles left with about 1/2 of those to go into either the freezer or the canning jars...most of these cockerels.
The remaining Standard older pullets will begin to lay this fall with the younger ones laying in the spring. Some of these will become show/breeders or go into the layer house. Some will be sold.
Standard cockerels will be selected for show/breeder pens and the rest will be sold.
