Rooster tried to kill hen

My nine month Rooster was doing the same thing as your situation to my nine free ranged hens. He'd mount them and then rip off their head feathers and keep going on their heads to the bone. In the fall he was much less aggressive, this spring a monster.

Rooster became a pot pie, they are easy to replace.

It's been several weeks and I'm starting to think a few of these girls won't get any feathers back on their heads. Neosporin worked well for recovery. Good luck.

I have been keeping the hurt chicken seperate from the rooster and other hens. She has gotten out on a few occasions and gone back in the coop to be attacked yet again. She stayed on the roost until I came to get her the first time so he didn't get her, then she got braver and the last time he would have killed her but she was able to squeeze between the waterer and the fence until I came out to rescue her. For those who think he is mating her, that is not the case, he just goes for her head and doesn't even try to mate her. I am now letting Chicky out for a few hours by herself then putting her in the fenced in garden and letting the others out. I have ordered some Pick-No-More Lotion I found on the internet to spray on the back of her head once her head heals completely. It is suppose to deter the rooster and hens from pecking on her, it is hot and spicy. I sprayed on blue-kote to help her head heal. I will repost after I use the new lotion and let you know how it works.

The rooster doesn't bother any of the other hens, just Chicky.
