Hi, I'm new with chickens and I have 2 rir pullets at 4 months. When they go into there coop when night falls they go up to roost and do a lot of mucking around chirping and all on top off each other, the roost is 1.5m . Then they just jump down and cuddle up in the corner they seem to be happy.

Well, I don't know what to tell you other than mine know what they need/want!

My 3yo Buff Orpington hens have always roosted at night....until this BRUTAL winter where it has gotten down to -20F some nights! Now they sleep huddled close together on the floor in the shavings! I think I would too! LOL!

That's an interesting question.

I have a group that are free range, they will use the coop for laying eggs but otherwise they sleep on top of the coop's roof. I just let mine be.

I would be curious what others thought though.

Hi there,

and welcome to BYC!

Babies often don't know how to roost at night. So it might help if you go out after dark and place them on the roost bars. This will help teach them what you want them to do. Next time you raise chicks, be sure to include a roost bar in the brooder, starting with small branches and work up to a 2x4, 2 side up, as this helps them learn in the brooder how to roost so that when they are moved out into the coop, the instantly know how to sleep on the bars.

Good luck with your babies and enjoy BYC!
