Hi all, can someone help? My Norfolk Black Turkey has made a coughing noise since we rescued her, about December 2013, she's now got two swollen cheeks and is looking pretty fed up! She's eating and drinking but is definitely off colour. Any info on what to give her would be gratefully received. Thanks Kat.
 
segregate her from all your other birds.

not to scare you but, MG in chickens manifests itself in sinusitus type infections in turkeys. You could very well infect all your birds. They do not recover but are carriers. You can have the bird tested to see what is wrong with it but, keep in mind that "rescueing" a bird (that maybe should be put down) may put your whole flock at risk.

Thanks so much for your reply, I have had her to the vets and it is a sinus infection, she's now on Tylan. I will hopefully post a pic of her back to her normal self soon :)

This is very good information and very true.

Be very cautious with birds showing signs of respiratory infections and sinus infections, these are very contagious and even once they are better they are still carriers and can infect future birds you add to your flock. Poultry do not get "colds" or regular "sinus infections" there are infections that cause these symptoms like sneezing coughing swollen faces etc. Even if you aren't careful with disinfecting, you can carry potentially tcarry the disease to other peoples flocks just by walking on their property or even in feed stores with your infected shoes I know that sounds over the top but it happens.

I haven't had this problem thankfully, but I personally would cull any infected birds. That would just be my personal choice since I breed and sell lots of chicks and poults so I need a clean flock.
 
Hello!! My BBB turkey has been fighting a sinus infection and her face is terribly swollen. (For almost a month now!) I think she got it from my chickens, as she was new to the flock. I treated her with oxytetracycline for 13 days. Her cheeks were/are still very swollen. Someone told me it takes a while for the swelling to go down. This week, I read about blackhead and started her on cayenne pepper because she had been lethargic and the pepper has her peppy again. I just can't get those sinuses down. Can Tylan be used in her water now? I do not want to inject. I do want to enjoy this turkey on the table this holiday season. She's too too big to live beyond the holidays. Help is very appreciated! She's a beauty and I want to help her. My other Rio Grande turkeys were initially treated with her (they were new also) and they are all better. She just can't get those sinuses down.
