Isaac, My 5 Year Old Delaware Rooster....Old Age is Closing In On The Big Guy (Long Story)

Are there any kind of wraps you can put on chickens legs? Please forgive my ignorance, I've only known my neighbors' hens for reference, and they haven't yet experienced this issue. I do know heat lamps are not a good choice with wood shavings (that they did experience and lost a hen to smoke inhalation). If all else fails, you could quilt a chicken diaper (a BIG one), and let Ike and Finn share Speckled Roo's chair for the night! You have to admit, it would be a vision! Hope things work out okay. Isaac is one of the BYC legends and we're all pulling for him.

He'll be okay, I think, with super thick shavings/hay mixture and his two heat lamps. He has one of those black night reptile bulbs that points at the roost and in very cold weather, there is a 250W red heat lamp that is secured well to one of the roof rafters (it's about 5' high at that point). I hope it will be enough. Isaac hates Finn so they wouldn't willingly share anything!

I'm not a proponent of heated coops, but I do make concessions for specific situations, like Isaac and poor old Amanda, who can't get off the floor so she must have her own heat lamp in this type weather.

Now, they're saying 5* with a real feel of -18* for Wednesday night. Besides Isaac, on Rex's side of the coop, 5 year old Rita decided this would be a great time to do a hard molt, so she's all quills and bare spots. They're growing in fast, but not be fast enough to cover her completely by Wednesday night.

Oh my gosh! I just read through this whole thread. I think my EE rooster, Willow will be like Isaac, only Willow doesn't really like to be touched all that much.

I'm expecting Delawares in the spring from good lines. Can't wait, they are such pretty birds.

Give Isaac my best, I love the seniors.

Happy to have you join the thread! Isaac has braved the cold spells with panache this winter so far. No signs of trouble with Isaac. I lost his son, Rex, who lives on the opposite side of the coop, however, just over a week ago to what we've determined had to be internal injuries from a fight he got into with Deacon while on range. For the first time ever, when Rex went to chase him away, Deacon turned to fight and Rex was not expecting it so I think he was hit in the chest region and wasn't braced for it. So, now, Isaac's grandson, Atlas, who is Rex's son, is living on that side. He and Ike haven't developed that antagonistic relationship that Ike and Rex had so maybe Isaac won't be fighting at the fence quite as much as before.

So, the big guy is turning 6 years old next month. Looks like he'll probably make it from the way he's acting. He does sleep on the floor most of the time, but he has made it up to the roost a few nights.
