Just made the most AMAZING discovery EVER regarding Elderberries!!!

Glad I stumbled across this thread. We're overrun with elderberries, and I've been doing nothing with them but throwing clusters to the chickens.

huh....do they have them im mass.?....cause they look suspiciously like these "wild blueberries"...that we recently harvested...lol..they were good.(espically in a lemon cake).but...now i'm wondering?...hu...Wendy

I'm sure you have them in Mass. Were they small and crunchy? If not, you probably had blueberries. "Wild blueberries", afaik, are just low bush blueberries. They grow close to the ground. Most commercial blueberries, and all the wild blueberries here in Southern NJ, are high bush varieties.

A low bush blueberry plant is maybe a foot high. A high bush blueberry might be 5-6'. Elderberries can get up to 8-10' Blueberries tend to have many single berries while elderberries are in a few large flat clusters, like viburnums.

"Your mother is a hamster and your father smells of elderberries." Sorry, couldn't help it. For those of you who aren't hopelessly geeky, it's a quote form Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Yeah, I have actually spent the past couple of years letting them just go to waste....I finally decided it was ridiculous to let them ruin. And they really taste great!!! Now I am trying to convince my mother to use hers.
