Delaware's for Meat

Why thank you Linda. Hopefully the book I'm writing on sustainability is as well received.

I just got my first Delaware chicks this week from Sandhill Preservation. So far they are active and happy. We have 25 straight run babies, and will butcher all the roosters but one, which we will keep for breeding more Delawares. My goal is a meat and eggs flock.
So in choosing my rooster to keep for breeding, do I go with the heaviest at butcher time for this first generation? I really want faster growing cockerels to butcher, and productive layers to keep the family in eggs and for future generations.

This is my first one-breed flock with a goal other than eggs and cute birds. I'm going to be watching this thread, among others, to see what others' experiences are with this breed. We've done the Cornish X birds a few times in the past and been very happy with them, but I really want to go with a more sustainable flock that we can keep going ourselves and not have to buy chicks all the time.

Thanks!
