Come on...... Everyone is doing it!!!!

How much damage can a few warm eggs do????
Well, you see.....I really DO love my husband.....

Actually I checked my calendar, and if I set eggs on Monday (which I'm NOT doing) they would hatch about a week before we go on a trip. And while my house sitter is wonderful and amazing and is going to take care of the house/wood boiler/3 pens of birds, I don't want to push my luck with ALSO having chicks in the basement! I'm trying to decide if I want to set eggs the day before we leave and be half way through incubating when we get back.

Glad - if it was me i would wait till you get back from trip.. that way you can enjoy and relax and not worry about your eggs.. I know i would be thinking about them all the time especially not having access to check on the them once in a while

I *think* i'm over the "hovering" stage at this point. We did about 6(or more?) hatches last year and the excitement kind of wore off a little by the end. Well, the excitement of candling everything all the time did.

I *try* to not candle until day 10 anyway. We'll see. Not sure that I'll have enough time to get the brooders in order if I did that. I would probably *only* set silkies since there was a lot of "wanted" ads for those last year on CL. Of course people wanted "HENS ONLY" and they wanted to pay like $3/ea for them. If only people understood that you almost CANT'T sex silkies for 3 months!

Some people on CL... I sold the remainder of my flock, about 20 or so hens and 3 roosters, to make room for all the biddies I have coming this spring. I sold most of the hens for $6-8 each and they were all less than 2 years old. I can't tell you how many people asked if I could do better than that... It didn't outweigh the people who gladly paid the asking price and said they got a good deal lol

People are always looking for a deal or trying to be cheap. I used to do craft shows and people were always trying to make "deals" with me. you are getting paid for your TIME and investment with something. Just need to point out to the cheapo's how much they'll save in eggs I guess :)

I just got some blue/green eggs to set on Sunday...and a few browns.
From supposedly Araucana hens and roo but probably EE's....so the browns may hatch Olive eggers.

IF they hatch, hard to tell if they got frozen or not...but I'll go for it, hopefully get a few anyway.
Am throwing in some of my light brahma mutt hens, cochin mutt hens and dark brahma mutt roo.

my daughter keeps a eye on the temps of the bator, its in her room and she knows how to regulate it if it go up or down by putting in and taking out air plugs.. so i dont really worry about it..
we dont candle often either. but i think i may candle a couple egg in a few days because today is day 2.. just to see if there is viening.. because we had a 105 temp spike this am.. would like to know if it damaged them or not. also the eggs were collected when we had those freezing temps that concerns me some to.
probably wont check them again till lockdown.. .

My temp spiked today too while at work. But checked a lot of the eggs and they still have heart beatings and the older eggs are moving like crazy!

82 eggs total in bator
Half due on 20th
Rest due on 28th

All cochin bantams both smooth or frizzled
And mixed chocolate English orphington bantam/cochins
And pure chocolate English orphington bantams!
