GQF Quail pens and brooder info!

I have been using the GQF brooder and grow pens for a few years now and have had great success. I placed the brooder on the bottom of the stack and added a automatic gravity flow water system. Just set a 5 gallon bucket on top with lines running to the water trays for each pen with a float shut off, available from GQF.

I will start the chicks in a box brooder, with an alfalfa floor, for the first week due to the fact that the wire floor in the brooder is too large for the chicks feet. In addition, when I place the chicks in the brooder, after they reach one week of age, I add a chick feeder and water jar inside the brooder until they can reach outside the pen to access the food and water space that comes with the brooder. If you place freshly hatched chicks into the brooder from the incubator you will need to cover the wire floor with something for the first week. I know some folks have used empty feed bags to cover the wire floor and it seems to work just fine.

All in all the GQF brooder and grow pens seem to be well worth the expense. They are worth the investment but the shipping costs are hard to swallow.

On another note, its nice to be able to open the front of the pen when you have to transfer birds, so I placed the water on one of the sides of the pen not the front. It's easier to remove the feed tray if I have to slide open the front door. I just used some of the cardboard that the brooder came in to form a chick catching partition that I can slide in to push the birds to the back for catching. GQF wants $23 for theirs.

The birds seem to be very happy and if you are not handy with construction these pens work great.

I know this thread is old but I have one thing to add and one question. For assembly help, check out YouTube. Cackle Hatchery has a great series of 3 videos that made assembly much easier than the included instructions!
Second, talk to me about deep cleaning this devil between sets of chicks. I can take off the front of each level, pull out the bottom dropping trays, lift out the grid floor...but what about the side walls, back, and ceiling? Any tips?
