Found This In the Backyard This Morning

I would say its either a Cooper`s or Sharp-shinned Hawk, they are very similar. Another hawk or Great-horned owl could have killed it.
I had a bald eagle fly over my house a couple of weeks, I suppose it could have been that as well, though I would have expected it to be carried off in that instance.

I think it was an owl that killed it,,owls will kill other birds, and eat their heads.
It may very well have been, but have not seen or heard any owls around here. I did not know about owls eating the heads off of birds. I feel quite certain it was something very small that ate the flesh since the skeleton is intact.

ok,,I know that owls eat the insides of the body,,and then the take the head to their nest..kind of gross! But I have seen this a few times..

All raptors will hunt smaller raptors than themselves when given the chance. Either for food, for territory or protecting young. Owls nest early in the year and hawks will hunt their young during the day. Even when defending a nest, they will take the opportunity to eat. And if you seen a bald eagle recently, that could very well be who killed and attacked this hawk. And from the pic, it looks like a raptor kill. I've seen a bald eagle kill and eat a hawk.
