Food Scraps?

We are going to get chickens for my son's 4-H project. they say not to feed the chicken table scraps but I always thought you could. What do you all do?
 
I definitely do!
Pancakes, bread, fruit, salad, veggies, chicken, eggs, etc.

With the exception of anything like candy or spicy seasoned
 
Who says not to? Have you asked them why? There can be a lot of misinformation going around or they might have some valid specific reason in mind.

There are a few things mine don't get, citrus peels for example.

Mine do get regular potato peels, which are very safe, but mine don't get green potato peelings, which are not. That's what I mean by misinformation going around. Green potato peels contain a chemical that in certain dosages can cause harm. Regular potato peels don't, yet you see all kinds of warnings against potato peelings in general. Regular potato peels do not contain solanine. Green potato peels do.

Meat, even chicken!
Veggies
Potatoes and peels
citrus fruits (they don't eat the peel)
all garden or canning scraps or leftovers

My flock doesn't eat citrus, banana, onion or avocado peels, so I've quit putting them in the run. Other than that, pretty much everything id gone. I was cleaning out the freezer the other day and found an old gallon Ziploc bag of bluegill---free protein for the flock! Never had a problem with eggs tasting like fish, either.
 
I don't give chicken bones to the dog because they stick in her throat and she hacks for 3 days, if I give them to the cats they scatter them all over by the door where we walk, so naturally they go in the chicken pens. They won't eat okra unless it's boiled, nor jalepeno peppers or satsuma peels, never noticed if they eat onions or not, they do eat black bananas and they ate a chocolate cake once. "They say" they're not sposed to eat tomato plants but mine will strip a tomato plant leafless within 2 ft of the ground; my hens even bite of small pieces and feed them to their bittys.
 
Mine love any spaghetti or pasta with meat sauce leftovers. Any thing that would go into a salad is fair game also. I basically keep a ziploc in the fridge for scraps and treat the girls every couple of days. Today it was cornbread and corn flakes from breakfast. They help me get the garden ready in the spring and close it out in the fall.
 
Our chickens love scraps! Rice, bananas, bread, yogurt, corn, beans, peas, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, bread crust, cabbage, squash, pears, are just a handful of what my crew likes to eat. Now that they have been locked up because of the frigid winter, they almost appear to be excited when I come into their house to see what I have.

Our vet recommends them getting some scraps along with their normal chicken feed. It allows for a diverse diet that gives them additional vitamins and proteins.
 
mine get scraps from a deli , they also like ground moose ,they like canned salmon, they don't care for onions, they also like oatmeal, an fermented feed every other day or so as well as there layer they have access to 24-7
