Poultry Breeds of Spanish Ancestry

anyone on here still breeding Pita Pintas.

I just heard from Debi that Zorro (her main roo) died

All I seem to be able to hatch are mutts and Boy Pitas. Only one seems to be a contender with their daddy. Im down to 5 pita girls plus one pullet)

Debi hasnt got her breeding flock together this year so far its looking like fall. My first small hatch yeilded 3 Pitas 2 boys and the 1 girl. Ive hatched out 2 more since then but both seem to be boys.

Ill have not had great fertility and hatch rates so far however I have hatched a few pita mutts. Ill be moving the distraction birds out of the pen soon and probably try hatching in september all pitas. If the egg laying cooperates that is.

Is anyone on this thread who lives within a 2 or 3 hour radius of San Francisco interested in breeding Pita Pinta? We have such a small number of breeders here in the US and I'm interested in helping other breeders get a start with this fantastic breed. I am currently hatching chicks and I also have fertile eggs. I don't ship chicks but could ship eggs preferably within CA. Here are a few pics of my flock.

We need more people to breed these birds. I have a few also but Debi has the largest flock.

Your birds are really pretty! Is the Pita Pinta primarily for eggs or are they a dual propose breed? Is there a standard? It looks like there is a blue chicken mixed in with the Pita Pinta in your second picture. Do they have the Blue gene? Wish I lived a little closer to you.

They are a dual purpose but on the smaller side males (and older females) are large enough to process for a 3+ lb dressed bird at between 20-24 weeks. There is a spanish standard. They are very tasty as I have eaten several of the males now.

They do not have the blue egg gene. The blue in the background is probably one of her Langshan's. I also have a breeding flock of pitas and live near @PetRock. (Most of my birds are from her)

That is my sneaky blue Langshan girl who was in love with Pedro. She went to great lengths to get out of her chicken pen, through the dog yard, and into the area with the Pita Pinta! Unfortunately, my 10 month old puppy decided that she was entering the dog yard to play with her and we had to put her down. I had no idea that she was waiting all day to lay her eggs in the PP coop. So when I sent Flavio PP eggs last month, there were at least 3 mixed eggs in the bunch and 2 or 3 of them hatched. I have hatched on purpose several black Langshan/PP mix birds that are bigger birds and great layers. It will be interesting to see what the blue mixes look like when they are mature.
