The past few years we have been asked to register our flocks in MD for our own health safety and the prevention of disease, now (like gun laws) we find the real reason for registration.. The democrats have introduced a bill to tax every owner for every chicken they own. Not enough details but right now it stands at a nickel a bird but knowing politicians if it's a nickel today it will be a dollar in less than 5 years. We also don't know how often we'll be required to pay this tax.. Maryland, they'll tax the rain AND your chickena.

The NPIP is really nice for people that are looking at buying chickens from breeders because it tells us that their entire flock were tested for some illnesses and were negative. If you are not selling chicks and eggs for hatching I see no reason to register your flock. Now some cities do have laws to require registering in city limits only and that is how (when it started) they keep track of the limits and who goes over them. Outside city limits shouldn't matter. I live outside city limits and don't sell chickens or hatching eggs so you will never catch me registering my flock.

Ah, Maryland. I can't believe anyone actually goes along with flock registration down there, but then again, I guess I can. Must be something in that DC water.
