City of Torrance to Consider the Keeping of Chickens and Bees

Well the City of Torrance is taking on chickens and bee keeping again. According to the community development director the City Council will be discussing this issue at their City Council meeting on August 4th 2015 at 7 pm. If you are available to attend please join us as we encourage the council to move forward and finalize the new ordinance and finally let the people of Torrance keep chickens (and bees). I am encouraged by this and look forward to seeing everyone there!

Well it looks like the city of Torrance is going to let us have chickens! They are working out the details, how many (sounds like 3 or 4 maximum), etc.. by the general attitude of the council, they will not oppose those that currently have chickens. I am so excited I finally get to have chickens and will be visiting this site much more often now.

It is sad how civic issues like this are so unknown to residents. I would be interested in knowing more about this and would have supported the cause... if I would've had any idea they were being proposed. Dave Meslin did a TED Talk on this very concept.

Anyway, any general timetable for this becoming a reality? In perusing this thread, it seems like it just drags on with no concrete timetable. I would love to see this come to pass by the end of this year ('15). Thank you for updating.

The outcome of the council meeting was basically there is no opposition to the proposal of domestic chickens, the council is going to do more research on the bee keeping issue. The council will now move on the to particulars, such as number of chickens, placement of coops and such, then propose a revision to the law and will formally allow chickens in the near future (hopefully by the end of the year). The council meeting left us all with the impression that if you have chickens or get chickens in the City of Torrance they will not oppose or cite you for it. So overall it was a win for chicken lovers! It looks like they will limit the number to 3 or 4 (no more then 4) chickens and possibly require a set back for a coop. Overall a very encouraging meeting. I am very pleased.

I watched the video of the meeting online. The only real decision the council made was to separate the discussion of chickens and bee keeping since they have been lumping the two together so far. Unfortunately they chose to begin with the bee topic which means they likely won't even talk about chickens for another 6-12 months at the rate they seem to be going. So although they all seemed to be in favor of allowing chickens, I'm guessing it will be another 2 years before it is a reality.
