Hello Friends!

My yellow black mouth cur had puppies 10 days ago and her breast are square shaped, extremely hard, and look very deformed. She is nursing her pups, eating, drinking, and none have any odd marks or obvious problems. They do get much softer and more normal after she nurses, but quickly go back to appearing square and problematic. Has anyone seen this or do you know what this is? If anything with her or the puppies seemed wrong I would take her to the vet. It's just very odd looking.

I'm trying to get pictures that describe and show exactly what I am talking about. Basically use your imagination and picture a dog that looks and feels like it got artificial breast implants. Not a normal lactating momma dog. My husband has whelped several litters of puppies and said he has never seen anything like this and that it isn't right.

Looks like an infection she may need antibiotics I'd take her to the vet. Years ago i had an Irish Setter have this happen and we had to take the puppies away from her till she got over the infection. I believe it's called mastitis. you can buy mother milk for the puppies.

Since it started I've been looking into and suspecting mastitis but it is in all of her breast and from what I have read it usually only affects one. Did your dog have it in all of hers?

It's all of her teats, they all are still producing milk, and there is no hot or sore looking spots in them. I've read mastitis rarely affects more than one or two teats. Any other ideas?

Awww, poor mama. I hope she is not in any pain. Your puppies are adorable.
Never seen anything like this either. Did you research the breed of dog to see if there are any conditions that affect this breed?
I would take her to the vet. Best of luck and congratulations on your pups.

No she seems above and beyond okay. Playful, eating and drinking great, wanting to hunt, still cleaning and nursing her pups fine. I haven't found anything about this being specific to cur dogs. In fact no matter what I google only mastitis comes up. I'm thinking I should start her on antibiotics and prepare to feed her pups. I may still take her to the vet Monday. Nothing seems wrong, it just looks so wrong!

She could just be a heavy milk producer. Mastitis is usually fairly painful and as you mentioned, usually only affects one or a few of the teats, but I have heard of it occasionally affecting all of the teats. Usually the milk is filled with pus and stringy though. It's really difficult to tell what this is just looking at pictures.

A visit to the vet is not a bad idea, but if she looks ok and the puppies have full bellies, I would hold off on the antibiotics until you speak with the vet. Definitely keep us updated!
