Friesian Fowl Q&A Discussion Thread

Thx Cree. I just wondered what you thought of his color? Would you say he is a Gold or Lemon or a mix of both? :)

I still want some lemon hatching eggs from you. If you think he is a good type for a Frisian breeding program, I iwill start
with him and some eggs I get from you, if it works out.

He is definitely a lemon! I would like to give my guy another week with the girls so any possibility of the gold guy would be gone. After that, a week in the incubator to check fertility and if that is good, I would be thrilled to sell eggs! They are producing like crazy.

I have been letting them free range in the evenings and my lemon guy is much more romantic and attentive than he was previously. Hopefully the fertility will be great!

I thought he was a lemon, but when I saw yours they seemed much lighter than him, so I was confused.
No hurry really with the eggs. Any time. It is still winter here. The first of March would be good going into Spring.
Just looking to see what other kind you have. . . Do you like the Queen Silvia? What do you think of the Silverudds?
I love my one blue roo and black hen. Egg laying great and sweet dispositions on both
Not sure what I think of the Swedish Flowers. They tend to be bossy and like to rule, ha. Egg laying ok.
I got mine from GFF. The SF roo had barring on his tail, although he was truly magnificent, I went ahead and gave
him away, in case he had Beilavelder in him or similar. GFF said he looked like all their SF, but I felt uncertain to
propogate something like that.

My distrust of GFF started with the Silverudd's Blue (Isbar) and the mess they made with the later imports. There is a Swedish Cultural Hen page where the people that keep the stud books in Sweden ( yes, they register them and the chicks that are produced) post pictures of the breeds they are attempting to save. Isbar are actually another breed entirely. They are a barred breed. What is now called Silverudd's Blue was called Swedish Green egg layer over there. I am sure GFF saw the need to differentiate them from an OE thus a catchy name. I love my SB. I only have 1st imports so I dont have the problems associated with the later imports. Mine are smaller birds that lay lots of large green eggs. I like the Queen Silvia. I have the silver. They lay medium eggs and do not like confinement. They are great fliers and would rather roost in the trees than be captured and that is a bit of a problem. They are not mean to people, but very hard on other chicken breeds. I love my SFH's. You are correct that there should not be any barring. Another GFF misadventure? They are absolutely my favorite breed. I have all colors and nearly 50 birds. I have an older guy named Ragnar who has faced down a hawk and takes the chicks under his wing. He doesn't allow any misbehaving in the flock. He is tolerant of the teenage cockerels and I have never actually seen him fight anyone. He just runs over to them and intimidates. Can you tell I love my Swedes? Frisians are calm too and I've been letting them out in the evenings as a lemon group. Really pretty. This is earlier this week. That is a SFH watching from the other field in the background.

That is the most beautiful flock of chickens you have!

I think my Isbar/Silverudds must have been from GFF's later import, but they are lovely. I only have two. The hen is black and is a fabulous layer of minty green speckled eggs.
What problems were there with the second import?

The Silvias are probably not something I should consider for me after your description. I have enough trouble with my Orust. Now THAT is an interesting breed.
I quite like them. I didn't get a rooster with the four I purchased from GFF, nor can I find anyone local that knows about them or has any.

I only have the on SF hen, so I made a judgement of the breed based on her :) shouldn't have done that, ha. She is a very dominant hen in the flock and mean toward
any newcomers. She is a so so layer. Are your SF crested?

I didn't ask you how much for your Lemon Frisian hatching eggs. You can PM me if you want.
Spring always makes me excited to dust of my incubator for new baby chicks. I need to move to the country.

Cree~ Wondering if you will have any hatching eggs to sell? I would love to get them started this month if you have any.
Thanks.
YES!
Please PM me if interested.
The lemon and gold have been separated for about a month and the fertility is good. Chicks will be hatching in a couple of weeks also.
