Raising Chickens in Hawaii

Is anyone familiar with Hawaii residential laws/regulations on raising chickens in the backyard? I live on Maui and was thinking about raising a few (3-5) chickens. Thanks for your help!

Well, the only thing I know about Hawiian government is that it I believe there is no county level of jurisdiction - as I understand it, there are local town/city codes, and state codes, but not the county level government common in the rest of the country.

So you might weant to start with your local town or city regulations. Zoning or the Board of Health might be the place to start.

Aloha, Ronin, I tried to find anything in the minutes of Maui County meetings, with only a severely-convoluted government-speak modification in 1991 of ordinance 2030, restricting poultry raising for commercial uses [emphasis mine] to be on properties of at least one-half acre. I also came aross a regulation in the Animal Control reg's about dogs that attack poultry, but it was apparently only a transcript of public input; comments were made about restricting roosters from residential areas, but there was no mention about keeping backyard chickens otherwise. I view it as a long-standing tradition in these islands, so they probably aren't too focused on BYC's. You may have found that you can get chicks at Del's in Kahului, and Walmart has stacks of starter and layer feeds in the pet food area. I am in Pukalani, 0.25 Ac lot, but as soon as I can afford a decent coop for 3 birds, I hope to avoid neighbor complaints by not getting a roo. Unless there's a change in the "rules" I think you can have a flock, even in a reidential zone. Let's hope so!

Might want to check your local laws there on Maui they may vary from O'ahu... at first I was told I could raise up to four for eggs, domestic not for sale.. but found out in the nick of time it is Two.
