I'm thinking about starting out my ornamental pond with a pair of American widgeons any ideas on how to set up my pond and all that stuff or should I just use my natural pond that is connected to the the Mississippi River(I'm thinking not)

We bought property from a serious exotic water fowl breeder ( which is how we got into birds in the first place) He had concrete ponds in a covered aviary setting. He said that a constant source of running fresh water was very important. We had to move, but brought our swans and geese and dug a pond and lined it. A hose provides fresh water and it drains into a culvert. There are lots of ways to go about it. Here is a link to one of many threads on the subject: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/268411/questions-about-making-a-duck-pond.

You could try using the search function for the site with terms like "duck pond aviary" and see if you get some ideas. Then you could private message the members who have duck ponds that fit your needs and ask questions.
