From what I've read, Coyotes in different parts of the USA have different genetic makeup. Eastern coyotes have more wolf gene, and southern coyotes have less. I think it's about the mating opportunities while population expansion happened...wolves do kill coyotes while both live in an area. Coyotes who go after your dog will do so when they are raising pups, so springtime is more dangerous for your dog.
Anyway...I live in the Adirondacks and have seen coyotes who resemble wolves. They can get to 65-70 lbs here, according to people who hunt.
My chickens live in Fort Knox, and don't free range when other food resources are scarce. They hate the snow anyway.
