The question is simple enough yet you'll get conflicting answers depending on whom you ask. Is it that some people lack a key component to the query? i.e. the definition of an egg?
Merriam-Webster:
2egg
noun, often attributive
: a hard-shelled oval thing from which a young bird is born; also : an oval or round thing from which a snake, frog, insect, etc., is born
: the egg of a bird (especially a chicken) eaten as food
biology : a cell that is produced by the female sexual organs and that combines with the male's sperm in reproduction
If precision of language is to be observed then the biological definition would be used but even the cursory explanation of eggs being shelled suffices in proving the egg came first. After all, fish lay eggs and there was a time there were no land animals right?
There are those that state the chicken had to come first to lay a chicken egg. That is not the question asked rather an abbreviated scope encompassing only the chicken egg itself. With this parameter one would conclude during the process of evolution a bird became a chicken. Through genetic abnormalities in each offspring changes to life occur. Therefore enough mutations occurred in the formation of an egg to bring forth the chicken. Yet again a resounding “egg” affirmation. So why are there still people who adamantly believe the chicken came first? Is it a question of faith? Therein I believe lies the answer to the true question behind a shelled facade. It’s not a question of logic rather a question of belief.
A fundamental divide in belief still exist. Theology plays a large role in modern society. To boil the egg question down one merely needs to ask “Do you believe in evolution?” The answer to this alone will provide the definitive answer to the age old query of which came first, “the chicken or the egg?”
