16% vs. 20% Protein Layer Feed?

A few weeks ago OldGal and I went to pickup some feed for the girls. We, by default have always used 20% Layer Mash Krumbles. (Didn't even know there was another option

) Anyway, they were out of 20% and offered us 14%. We needed the feed so we went with it. Strangest thing; both the chickens and the ducks seem to be laying better on the 14% and it's a little bit cheaper.

Anyone have an explanation?
