is my outside brooder ok?

Great Thread! I am sick of having the chicks, that are six weeks old, in the house! Coop is not ready yet- next week is the goal. It's supposed to be in the 40's tonight and I really want the brooder out of my office and on the screen porch. I was nervous about the low temps but from what I hear from all of you, they should be fine with a heat lamp. Yay!
At six weeks they should be fully feathered and OK without extra heat.

I worried for nothing all night long! They were huddled under the light but seemed fine. I have to remember that they are animals and will have to get used to the cold temps here in New England!

I'm jealous!! I'd love some 40's right about now. It was in the 90's today and I hate heat!!

They really are stronger than we tnink ! Glad you got them out. I put my chicks out a week ago. They were 4 weeks old. I did run the heat lamp a few nights but now they are doing fine with out it.

39 degrees tonight- sheesh, it feels like October here in NH! I am spoiling them and giving them the heat lamp tonight as they are in the brooder outside on the screen porch. The coop will be done by Monday....hopefully with my father-in-laws help! I am recovering from spinal fusion and cannot help with the build :(

I brood mine outside in an open pen in the run - not the coop - from the start. I did that 5 weeks in the house with a heat lamp thing last year and I swore I'd never do it again! I use a heating pad, a towel, a metal frame and some straw. That's it. Brooded three batches of chicks that way this year, with temps in the teens and twenties for the first two batches. They have all absolutely thrived!
